Kitchen Maestro 2017 - Launch Cook-off

The launch of the popular Walmer Park Kitchen Maestro competition took place on 8 July 2017, with an exciting Food Truck vs the Kitchen cook-off in the Centre Court area. The theme of the cook-off was STREET FOOD MEETS THE KITCHEN where we saw three local food truck owners showcase their talents against three of the competition past winners. Thank you to our pro's: - Dewald Hurter from Makoy, The Kitchen and Flair Catering - Craig Brandon Williams from Urban Eats - Eddie Mponda and Janey Nortje from Groundfloor Cafe -2013 Kitchen Maestro winner Martinette Magnee - 2015 Kitchen Maestro winner Dallas Land - 2016 Kitchen Maestro winner Caitlin Botha.

The first Cook-off of the competition started with a blast on 15 July 2017, all contestants were given basic ingredients to create a homemade burger.... the challenge was to take those ingredients and impress the judges Dewald Hurter from Flair Catering, Chantel Cuthbert 2016 Kitchen Maestro Runner up and Craig Williams from Urban Eats. Our TOP TWO in cook-off 1 who proceeded to the Le Creuset South Africa Semi-finals are: - Imke Smit - Helena Roux

The second Cook-off of the competition was held this past weekend, the Cook-off 2 challenge was GOURMET TACO's. All the contestants were given basic Taco ingredients ... the challenge was to take those ingredients and impress the judges Craig Williams from Urban Eats, 2015 Kitchen Maestro Winner Dallas Land and the lovely Sarah Gibson from Two Oceans Wines. Our TOP TWO in cook-off 2 who proceeded to the Le Creuset South Africa Semi-finals are: - Beverly Strydom and Ian Smith

The last round of 'home cook hopefuls' cooked off in the Kitchen Maestro competition this past Saturday. The cook-off 3 challenge was GOURMET PIZZA's, All the contestants were given basic ingredients as well as pizza bases sponsored by Groundfloor Cafe ... the challenge was to take those ingredients and impress the judges Janey Nortje from Groundfloor Cafe, Dewald Hurter from Flair Catering and The Kitchen and 2016 Kitchen Maestro Winner Caitlin Botha! Saturday, 5th August saw semi-finalist Imke Smit and Helena Roux from Cook-off 1, Beverly Strydom and Ian Smith from Cook-off 2, Tracy Crommelin and Siobhan Newcombe from Cook-off 3. All the semi-finalist were given a Le Creuset Pressure Test, in the form of a Le Creuset Recipe selected By Chef Dewald Hurter - the recipe they had to replicate and add there unique twist and flavour to was the “Lemon & Herb Roasted Chicken with Mushroom and Cream Sauce” (available on the Le Creuset website) Our 2017 KITCHEN MAESTRO FINALIST were announced! Kitchen Maestro 2017 – Final cook-off

Our 2017 KITCHEN MAESTRO FINALIST - Ian Smith and Helena Roux cooked off in a nail biting 2017 Final. With 1 hour cooking time both finalist had to create their signature dish as well as the mammoth task to create a dessert selected by Chef Dewald – a Chocolate Soufflé. After a stressful finish both finalists succeeded to plate beautifully presented dishes to the judges, Kevin Askew from Swiss Appliances, Chef Dewald Hurter from Flair Catering The Kitchen and Catherine Fraser from Dulce Café Walmer Park. Our 2017 Kitchen Maestro winner Ian Smith, IT Technician at Nelson Mandela University won the judges over with his cumin, turmeric and coriander rubbed Lamb chops served with Tzatziki, oven roasted veg and sweet potato medallions.
